Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah
God has gone up with a shout,
the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
sing praises with a psalm!
God reigns over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
he is highly exalted!
Psalm 47 ESV
Is our God only King over the church, living and reigning only in our hearts? Is He like other tribal gods or nationalistic gods with the devil ruling over the rest of mankind? While Satan is described as the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2), he is not supreme. The Lord is the sovereign King of all the earth—in fact, over all of creation. Every nation and every person is accountable and answerable to Him alone. The Lord is so highly exalted over His creation that every army and every politician is His and He orders and directs the paths and actions of the power brokers. Think about how this applies to the 2012 election, the rise of China, rogue nations such as Iran and North Korea, your boss at work, or an obstinate neighbor.
With these thoughts in mind, we rejoice, we sing, we shout … we even clap our hands (I know this is a stretch for some of us). We are to take this message into the entire world so all men may rejoice with us. As Psalm 67 states:
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth. Selah
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!
Psalm 67:4-5 ESV)
