a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.
Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
that he may deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waits for the LORD;
he is our help and our shield.
For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.
(Psalm 33:16-22 ESV)
Waiting on the Lord and resting in Christ are commands that should not be overlooked or neglected. Falling into bed at night totally exhausted and realizing that I did not do all things well nor accomplish all that I wanted to is a blessing from God because it brings me back to reality. “The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue.” Only God builds, strengthens and gives the increase. My Type A personality with all the energy I can find will still amount to nothing.
We are to wait on Him, be glad in Him, and trust in His holy name. This is at times very difficult …OK, it’s difficult almost all the time. That’s why we are told to pray, “Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you.” It is requesting the Lord’s presence and blessing to be upon us to captivate our attention and affections so that we are not distracted by lesser things. And it is not so much that we are waiting on an answer to prayer, though that is part of it, as much as what it is that our desire is for God and that is enough. As the Sons of Korah put it in Psalm 84:
How lovely is your dwelling place,
O LORD of hosts!
My soul longs, yes, faints
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O LORD of hosts,
my King and my God.
Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
ever singing your praise! Selah
Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
in whose heart are the highways to Zion.
As they go through the Valley of Baca
they make it a place of springs;
the early rain also covers it with pools.
They go from strength to strength;
each one appears before God in Zion.
O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer;
give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah
Behold our shield, O God;
look on the face of your anointed!
For a day in your courts is better
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
O LORD of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!
