election with a wide-angle lens. It is true that the Lord is sovereignly

Today, however, I’d like to look at the state of our nation in another,
yet still hopefully biblical, way. Not to be grieved and even mourn over the condition of the United States is to detach yourself from reality. Not to be angry over the sin, blasphemy and the lie that right is wrong and wrong is right, is to dishonor our Savior and neglect His holy standard. Remember, Christ died to make men holy. So, here are few counterpoints that need to be in place in order to have a balanced view on the American cultural and political climate.
1. The trends in our culture should break our hearts and bring us to our knees.
a. There are approximately 3500 abortions performed every day in the United States.
b. Human trafficking is on the rise here in the United States especially now with harder economic times.
c. Nine states (along with the District of Columbia and two Indian tribes) have legalized same sex marriage.
d. Binge drinking is on the rise in all age groups with the largest increase being seen among 18-20 year olds.
e. While the overall divorce rate has stabilized, divorces among Baby Boomers have doubled.
f. The number of couples cohabitating and having children outside of marriage is on the rise.
g. Over $3000 are spent on pornography every second of every day.
h. Church attendance is on the decline while the number of those with no religious affiliation increases.
2. I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession, saying, “O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day… (Daniel 9:4-7
ESV) – The Church of Jesus Christ must own up to its share of responsibility in the decline of our nation through the sin present in our own camp and neglect of the gospel for lesser things like moralism and church growth strategies.
3. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their
thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For
their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are
gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1:18-32 ESV) – I know this is a long passage, but I’ll go out on a limb to say that I believe it illustrates exactly what is taking place in the United States today. Our nation, as a whole, has rejected the truth about God that is obviously seen all around us and has suppressed this truth with the lies of evolution, materialism, hedonism, and country/government idolatry. We are worshipping people and things instead of the One, true, living God. (This rejection of the truth took place on a large scale in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.) So, the Lord began removing His restraining hand against evil. Our culture, though it was never perfect, began to openly embrace sins that at one time were taboo and hidden and rather than repent of these sins, has chosen to thirst for more deviant and degrading sin. Again, the Lord has further removed His common grace that holds back the tide of evil. We appear to now be on a fast downward spiral into the sewer as a result of God's judgment ... "the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men."
So on this side of the election, we have reason for concern with those elected into office—concern but not despair. The Lord is in heaven and does all He pleases. It is plain to see from scripture that He places each president into office for His own purposes.
Where we live (the everyday grind) we need to be concerned with the stewardship that has been given to us. Maybe it’s one talent or two or five, but nothing can ultimately stop us from faithfully discharging this responsibility. So let’s labor with the soon coming King. He expects us to have a good return on this spiritual investment and rewards His children with a rich welcome into His presence and joy.
