The Encouragement to Keep Praying

6/20/2012

I received a call this evening from a good friend. We were able to quickly get caught up on our week and share things that we are praying about. It was a real encouragement to me that I have a brother in Christ standing with me in prayer. I'm reminded of two thoughts from one of the Reformers on the matter of prayer. Let's not give up praying for one another and trusting that our loving heavenly Father provides for our needs with good and precious blessings.

“Our prayer must not be self-centered. It must arise not only because we feel our own need as a burden we must lay upon God, but also because we are so bound up in love for our fellow men that we feel their need as acutely as our own. To make intercession for men is the most powerful and practical way in which we can express our love for them. ”

“We ought to contemplate providence not as curious and fickle persons are wont to do but as a ground of confidence and excitement to prayer. When he informs us that the hairs of our head are all numbered it is not to encourage trivial speculations but to instruct us to depend on the fatherly care of God which is exercised over these frail bodies.”

Mark Shaeffer is pastor of Grace Covenant Church. He and his wife, Lynn, have been married for 27 years and are delighted to be the parents of 13 awesome children (no, the 13 is not a typo). When he is not reading, studying, preaching or helping with Algebra, Mark enjoys hiking and backyard football with his family, folk and early music, and all things historical.
