The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone…. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 ESV)
admit it is a wonderful time of year. However, things are not right in this
world and things aren’t going to change simply because we have snow and we’re all home for the holidays.
I believe the thoughts and feelings that well up inside of us in
December are actually a longing for something more than this life has to give. So, I would like to offer you Jesus.
He is the One who came into this broken world to redeem it and make all things right. Jesus in fact accomplished all that He came to do through His death and resurrection—yes, He is alive despite what you may have heard. And right now He is at work in this world bringing everything under His loving control.
One day, not this December 25, but one day, those devoted to and in love with this “child born to us” will celebrate Him and the consummation of all His work. Until then, let us help each other through the long, painful days here on earth by pointing to the hope found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
And when you sing Christmas carols, sing them with one foot planted on the earth and the other in heaven itself.
