I make well-being and create calamity,
I am the LORD, who does all these things.
(Isaiah 45:7 ESV)
And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well….” (Mark 7:37 ESV)
The next time we’re tempted to give God a poor rating in His job performance, we need to remember that we only see in a mirror dimly. Despite how much evil we encounter in this life or how much the Church seems to falter, Scripture declares that God is sovereign, good, and does all things well. The Lord is not incompetent, frustrated by what’s happening in the world or asleep.
As the pagan king Nebuchadnezzar was shown (by God): “… his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done’” (Daniel 4:34-35 ESV)? In that day, when we see Jesus face to face, we also will be overwhelmed to realize the Lord has accomplished all that He said He would. And in the brilliance of His glory, we will fall face down and worship our good, all-powerful and all-loving God.
