But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. (1 John 3:17-18)
I believe this to be true on the individual level and I also believe it to be true on the national level. The United States of America, with all its faults and debt, is still able to exert influence and even help to restrain evil and provide for those less fortunate.
However, there is a movement among some of us here to shut out the world and to live as isolationists. Some would say that we have enough problems of our own and it is no longer "safe" to come to the aid of others. So, they would have us turn inward and simply live as an island in a sea with others drowning all around us.
With a major election right around the corner, Christians must carefully pray through 1 John 3 and vote for the candidates who can balance obligations at home and yet still make a difference in this evil world.
