We'll start with a few wrong ideas before we move onto the positive. Wrong ideas like:
1. The only hope heaven gives us is an escape from this world. We view God as being powerless over evil, injustice, and our decaying bodies. We can’t get our arms around the prayer “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
2. Rather than waiting for “kingdom come,” we attempt to create our own little heaven here and now— no suffering and all comfort. All pleasure and needs are met. Picking up the cross daily and following Christ is traded in for immediate gratification of the glory we imagine is due the saint. We fail to realize that the promised blessings of glory only come after the cross.
3. Our sinful hearts shape heaven into something it isn’t. We imagine sinful desires being satisfied in one way or another. Our view of heaven has little capacity to hold on to the ideas of holiness, true Sabbath rest, and unhindered service to God.
