“…Woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood. But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus…. … So that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs. (2 Corinthians 2:11 ESV)
Is it any wonder our struggle against sin and the old nature is so intense? We face an enemy who rages against us—his anger and hatred are off the charts. And Satan knows our weaknesses. He can easily penetrate into the deep recesses of our hearts and minds with cunning attacks. Our hearts are already “deceitful above all things and desperately sick” (Jer. 17:9) and the adversary of the saints knows how to slyly appeal to our slavish fears and desires.
So what hope do we have and where does our help come from? The child of God has every reason to be hopeful because God graciously intervenes to give us the victory. Scripture is filled with not only the strategy for this victory, but also the conclusion of the story. Seriously take in what the Lord has spoken:
I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake. I am writing to you, fathers because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. (1 John 2:12-14 ESV)
And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. (Revelation 12:11 ESV)
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. (Romans 16:20 ESV)
