The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.
I've heard it said, "Well, it wasn't meant to be. God must have something better for me." This is certainly true. The Lord provides for every minuscule need we have with great wisdom and generosity. However, this isn't the end of the story in regards to His providence. He superintends ALL events, for both saint and sinner, to direct every situation to its intended conclusion—even the circumstances we feel are not doing us any good.
With this assurance in mind, the Christian has the opportunity to run to the powerful arms of the Almighty to find peace and rest from anxiety and distress. We should never feel that some cold, impersonal force is at work in our lives and this must be countered by a loving, personal God. No, if we look a little closer, we will see the clear evidence that it is our God at work remaining faithful to His divine nature and purpose.
So we can rejoice in God's providence and thank Him for his loving care no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in. We can actually echo the words of the psalmist:
If the LORD had not been my help,
my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence.
When I thought, “My foot slips,”
your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up.
When the cares of my heart are many,
your consolations cheer my soul.
