… You shall be holy, for I am holy. (1 Peter 1:16 ESV)
… and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. (Philippians 1:10 ESV)
There’s a lot of talk these days about being on mission with God and missional churches. This is great news because we are to reach the nations with the gospel, mercy and love—co-laboring with the Lord in this great work rather than remaining in church maintenance mode.
However, let’s just be sure that the pendulum doesn’t swing too far in the other direction. We’ve seen in the past examples of those who are all over the “doing” while neglecting the “being.” Scripture is very clear about the “being”: be holy, be pure, be filled with the Holy Spirit so that you are loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, etc. As the proverb goes:
Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give. (Proverbs 25:14 ESV)
