womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. (Psalm 127:3-5 ESV)
I can’t help but think about this psalm as Lynn and I enter a new phase
of life. It’s an incredible event to hold a new born baby in the hospital (we’ve done that a few times). It’s an even more blessed experience to see our adult children standing with us for the Kingdom of Jesus Christ and against evil. We praise God for what He is accomplishing in and through their lives.
If I’m reading the text correctly, godly parents are actually developing an arsenal. Rather than being the bother, speed bump on our way to having fun, and drain on the bank account or retirement fund that society says they are, children are in reality assets. God is looking for godly offspring (see Malachi 2:15) to spread abroad the glory of His name. (So dads are to guard both themselves and their marriage (also Malachi 2:15).) These “arrows” have the potential to go so much further than we could ever dream of going. In several concrete ways, our children already have. It's my prayer that they will continue on to hit the target we are all intended for—to be like Christ and finish the race set before us.
