A Different Perspective on the Ultimate Question

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones in answering the ultimate question "What is the gospel?" wrote to remind us that there are more than just concepts attached to the good news. Divine power and a changed life accompany believing the message preached. You and I must constantly guard our hearts against dead orthodoxy (simply crossing every "t" and dotting every "i" when it comes to truth while never experiencing any evidence of God's grace bearing fruit in our lives). Let Lloyd-Jones' words penetrate your heart and mind to bring about a greater harvest.

What is the gospel?  Well, you remember the answer of the Apostle Paul, 'It is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth' (Rom 1:16).  How easy it is to forget that. How easy to preach it as a system, to preach it as a collection of ideas, or just to preach it as a truth. Ah, but you can do that without power. There are people, says the Apostle Paul, who 'have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof' (2 Tim 3:5).  Christianity is primarily a life. It is a power. It is a manifestation of energy. (Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Revival (Crossway, 1987), 123)

    Pastor & Blogger

Mark Shaeffer is pastor of Grace Covenant Church. He and his wife, Lynn, have been married for 27 years and are delighted to be the parents of 13 awesome children (no, the 13 is not a typo). When he is not reading, studying, preaching or helping with Algebra, Mark enjoys hiking and backyard football with his family, folk and early music, and all things historical.
